Kent is graced with many passionate and extremely talented musicians, and on the evening of Friday April 20th, the annual Spring Chamber Recital provided an amazing opportunity for these students to showcase their skills.

Chamber Recitals are held once each term at the Pre-Engineering Center in town, but this Spring’s was especially a treat, with a few students performing as soloists for the first time at Kent. Students were accompanied by Mr. Moyer, one of our piano instructors.

Nineteen musicians filled the night with performances ranging from soloists to various quartets and quintets. Faculty, fellow students, family, and even town residents came to watch the recital, which was also live-streamed.

The night started off with two pieces performed by a jazz quartet made up Yeltsin Tang ‘19, John Robinson, Matthew Zhou ‘19, and Dr. Bouldin. This upbeat start was followed by gorgeous solos by Jeany Park ‘21 on the violin, Julia Park ‘21 on the flute, then Ivanka Shen ‘19 on the piano. A quintet formed by Catherine Zhou on flute, Wendy Wang ‘18 and Tina Moon ‘18 on violin, HyungJoo Ahn ‘18 on cello, and Mrs. Hobbs filling in on viola for Sunny Li ‘18, who was attending All-States at the time, with the latter four also performing in a string quartet.

Jeany Park ‘21 and Nebeeka Saha ‘20  were two musicians performing for the first time as soloists and Kent, and had fantastic solo debuts. Saha recounts that she was nervous but that support from her advisor, several teachers and coaches, friends, and her family, who drove up to watch her performance, allowed her to power through: “I told myself that I know the piece, and I’m going to do what I love by playing the violin.”

The showstoppers of the night were the surely the piano solos by Steven Sui ‘21 playing Debussy, Jasper Long ‘19’s Rachmaninoff, and Anjolie Doan ‘21’s “Fantasie Impromptu” by Chopin. The coordinator of this event Mrs. Hobbs eagerly encourages students and faculty alike to attend and show their support for student musicians and appreciate all they have to offer.
