Girls Squash cherishes time spent at New Englands

Kent News Staff

The most fitting description of Kent girls varsity squash is that every single player is a fighter. From the beginning of the season, the team faced unfortunate obstacles, such as a severe concussion of Jessica Choi ’16 and an ankle and knee injury of captain Andie Marczewski ’15. So when the team headed to Class C New Englands Championship for the first time in a few years, the team was two players short. Nevertheless, the Lions fought on, securing one point on top of another against tough players from eight other participating schools.

From Division 1 to 6, every player put her best efforts in for every point. Although Jojo Story ’18, ranked #1 at Kent, fished 8th, she fought fiercely as a freshman against veteran players who were mostly juniors and seniors. Pann Boonbaichaiyapruch was also ranked 8th in Division 3, but she showed determination and grit, as she continued to play another set even after getting hit on the face with a racquet. Morgan Baravalle ’17 dominated against an Ethel Walker player in Division 2, beating her opponent in only 3 games. Ranked #4 at Kent, Gyu-hui Hwang played one more match compared to every other Kent player, while Elena Song ’18 stepped up from the JV team to support the varsity team. The highest ranked player was Grace Yoo ’15, who finished #4 in the main draw of Division 5.

As every player’s match shows, no one gave up after meeting a tough opponent. For every game, the Lions gritted their teeth and gave it all. Thank you KGVS for the diligent work throughout the entire season!
