The Kent School Model United Nations team spent four days debating intensely at Columbia University last week. Although weary from long travels, the team jumped right into the conference, tackling incredibly difficult international issues.

Putting their heads together with over 750 delegates from around the world, the Kent team strove

to solve various global issues from the past, present, and even the future. The eleven students drafted creative resolutions designed to solve whatever problem the crisis staff presented.

The 27 committees that were held included the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAS, 1945), World Health Organization, and Detroit City Council of 2015.

The Columbia Model United Nations Conference and Exposition (CMUNCE XIV) awarded three delegates from Kent School. Phoebe Danaher ’16 received an award for Outstanding Delegate in her work for the 2nd Punic Wars in 218 BCE. Cassidy Tibbetts ’16 received an honorable mention for The Office of the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, 22 BBY, while (article author) Teddy Voyer ’16 was awarded a verbal commendation for his work in the Mexican Revolution of 1911.

This is the first conference that the Kent team has attended in the 2014-2015 school year. The team may attend another conference in the spring, and there is also some speculation as to whether or not the school will host a conference this year.
