The idea of athletic center renovation became a reality five years ago, though it’s been a topic of discussion for much longer. “The athletic center is critical for students’ health and wellness, and we hope by renovating it, we can attract more student-athletes as well,” said Mr. Barrett, the athletic director.
The focus of this project is to add additional athletic training space for the whole school community to use, including students, faculty, and sports teams. Mr. Barrett describes the plan: “We will have a beautiful indoor turf facility that can be transitioned from courts for basketball and badminton. The fitness center will also be increased with new cardio equipment. There will be a new space for yoga, pilates, and dance.” He explained that more space for athletic trainers and recovery equipment would be added to keep student-athletes healthy. “It is an incredible project, and I believe it will bring the entire school together.”
The footprint will stay the same for Gowan, North Court and the swimming pool. “But we are looking for significant upgrades. For example, bringing natural light and a new sound and timing system for the pool,” Mr. Barrett said. “There will be a full extension towards the tennis center, and a new great performance center will be built.”
Right now, Kent is partnering with some architects, and Mr. Barrett’s role is to bring the athletic vision to the project: “I make sure that all the athletic special needs are met, but we remain open-minded and are considering some outside programs such as club swimming.” From a fundraising perspective, Mr. Barrett also communicates with the donors about the future vision of the project and to strike up excitement with them.
The project is estimated to cost approximately sixty million dollars, all of which will be raised before work begins. Mr. Barrett estimates that this renovation of the athletic center will take about a year and a half, and will be completed in the next four years with, hopefully, as little disruption as possible.
