Beloved Panini Says Goodbye

In the small town of Kent, Connecticut, there are just 2,850 people according to the 2000 Census, but the town is blessed with a thriving village of restaurants, shops, and businesses. All of these businesses, including the Kent School and many others, give life to the thriving community. From tapas and pizza at Swyft, to gourmet chocolate and coffee at Kent Coffee, the Kent School students are spoiled regarding their choice in meals.

Among all of these great options, a hidden gem called the Panini Cafe stands out. Aptly named, they serve sandwiches, soups, and simple fare out of their little store on one of the Kent Barns back streets. The Kent Barns development is a curious place, riddled with furniture stores, art galleries, antique shops, and picnic tables.

Coming from the school, you’ll exit along Macedonia Road, crossing the Housatonic River at the bridge. Continuing along Macedonia Road, at the Route 7 intersection, you’ll head left, walking through a narrow gravel drive marked “Kent Barns.” Here you’ll find a haven of delicious food, from the Cafe’s trademark panini-style sandwiches to the owner James Fox’s special soups and sauces.

Simple spots like this, tucked out of view, are a big part of what makes the town of Kent so unique. When greeted by a friendly smile from owners Kathy Dolan and James Fox, and a delicious sandwich to match, the cafe truly is the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful New England environment. The Connecticut Post describes Panini Cafe as “a quintessential New England sandwich shop” and a “must-visit.”

Unfortunately, there is trouble brewing just off Fulling Lane. Fox and Dolan recently announced that they will be closing their cafe. Much to the dismay of longtime and new customers, the end of the Panini Cafe could be near. This unfortunate ending is all the more reason to check out the cafe while it is still open.

The silver lining is that the owners hope to open a food truck sometime soon with similar fare. However, the town of Kent has capped the food truck number at one, a space which is reportedly filled. The owners have thus started a petition. From just a glance, one can see that dozens of devoted customers have already signed it. So, this weekend stop by and support the amazing owners by signing the petition. There is hope for the Panini Cafe yet.
