Girls Lacrosse falls to Canterbury

On Saturday, April 14, Kent School’s girls varsity lacrosse team, under the leadership of teacher and coach Mrs. Cortney Duncan, faced off against Canterbury School at South Fields. It was a competitive game, and the team was down 2-6 at the half.

During the second period, the team did manage a late rally with two quick goals from Lizzy Gross ‘18 and Jesse DeVito ‘18, bringing the final score to 5 – 9. This gave the team a bunch of momentum, according to Coach Duncan, allowing Jenna Paszek ‘18 to make a lot of saves during the last 10 or 15 minutes. Coach Duncan describes this game as having been played “much more competitively than last year’s”.

The team was missing two starting defensive players, causing a shift in player positioning. Siena Smith ‘20 and Hannah Kent ‘21 stepped in to fill the roles of two absent seniors. As a result, the team only had one sub during the entire game, causing the game to be somewhat “gruelling,” according to Coach Duncan.

Coach Duncan says the team played good defense and were far more patient in offensive mode than last season’s team. As for weaknesses, Coach Duncan said “off-ball movements,” which is the level of activity by players without the ball during offensives, needed to be improved.

Thus, for training towards the next game, the team will be focusing on making “all 7 players on offense be on the same page.” Coach Duncan wants all players to understand what is going on and know exactly what to do when any one specific situation is being played out. Their next game will be against Suffield Academy.
