On Wednesday, January 13th, Kent boys varsity hockey faced off against Trinity Pawling in a game that ended in their first tie of the season. Coach Dale Reinhardt expressed prior to the game that the “team’s playing great but not winning the games.”

Period one began with Kent winning the starting face off. At the 15 minute mark, despite a few attempts from the neutral zone, Kent was focusing on defensive play. At 13:29, a TP shot sailed into the Kent goal. One minute later captain Greg Krisberg ’16 had a stellar attempt on goal, as well as Bert Dorman ’16 at 12:12. TP scored again at 11:51. Peter Negron ’17 blocked a shot that seemed to almost hit home thirty seconds later and again at 7:57. The rest of the period was a battle to disrupt TP’s offensive momentum.

The second period started off similarly to the first with Kent gaining control of the puck during the face off. Using this newly found momentum, at 14:23 Jeremy Routh ’18 went around the back of the TP goal, came up the side and gently slid the puck in. Assistant captain Teddy Simson ’16 had a great attempt at 12:54. Andrew Rinaldi ’17 and Gustav Lundin ’17 also had good shots on goal at 8:59 and four seconds later respectively, although they failed to score. The rest of the period was focused on defensive play and keeping TP in the neutral zone.

The starting face off was won by Kent in the third period. At 17:41, Augie Burkhardt ’17 scored on the TP goalie, tying the game up at 2-2. Negron had two great saves at 16:58 and 16:42. With TP gaining some momentum, Kent worked hard to disrupt their forward movement. Kyle Delmaestro ’17 made a big attempt at 8:07 but it failed to hit home. Negron had another great save at 5:27 by blocking a TP shot with his chest. Will Robertson ’17 hit the TP goalie in the head at 2:30. At exactly 1:00, Lundin made a big attempt but it was swatted away by TP.

The game went into five minutes of overtime. TP won the face off but were kept inside the neutral zone until 2:18 when Negron blocked their shot. Krisberg made a heroic attempt on goal at 1:05 but was taken on by three TP players, blocking the goal and any hope of scoring.

When asked how the game went, Dillon Gatto ’16 said, “The team needs to decide which direction to go in, and stop everything to do what has to be done to win.” The final score was 2-2 with 5 minutes of OT.
