Boys Hockey V. Gunnery: Motivation for the Future

On Wednesday, January 4th, the Kent School boys varsity hockey team played against Gunnery for the third time this season. After an aggressive game, the Kent boys had a tough 0-4 loss.

The boys came out with a strong first quarter, but as Co-Assistant Captain Teddy Simson 16’ acknowledged, the end of the game wasn’t satisfactory. Simson added, “On the second quarter we came out flat, but they buried their chances, as we didn’t. That was what the game came down to.”

Co-Assistant Captain and starting goalie Jackson Norris 16’ admitted to the team’s inability to control the game. “Yesterday’s game was not our best performance,” he said. “We essentially got outplayed in our own rink, which is not fun to experience, but at the same time we can learn from that.”

Having won both their previous games against Gunnery, the Kent boys were not expecting such a difficult time. One of the factors they did not anticipate was Gunnery’s goalie change. “Gunnery’s goalie was very strong in his performance, which shut down our power plays,” said Norris. “We couldn’t capitalize on each opportunity… Gunnery took a lot of penalties, which they always do. The only issue was that our power plays were not strong,” he said.

Though the game did not end as the boys had hoped, Simson did highlight the team’s strengths. “Even when we were down, we had a positive attitude,” Simson said. “Although we did not succeed in coming back, I think we still came together as a team.”

After a strong season so far, the loss was clearly unwelcome to everyone. But the team is determined to make this loss a learning opportunity rather than a setback. “Coming off this game, we definitely have motivation for the future,” Simson said.
