The Kent Varsity Boys Golf team completed the regular season with a 10-7 record and had a strong finish at the Founders Tournament, coming in third and finishing a season characterized by consistent progress, perseverance, and competitive teamwork.
According to Head Coach Mr. Sokolnicki, although the season started out with a few tight losses, the team regained its momentum as it continued to play throughout the spring season.
“We turned it up and finished the season with a good regular season record,” he said. Kent later placed third at the Founders Tournament, finishing behind The Hotchkiss School and Westminster School, the only two teams that had challenged Kent during the regular season.
Mr. Sokolnicki highlighted the players’ love for the sport and dedication to improving by describing the team’s environment as “enthusiastic.” Many players worked on their areas of weakness outside of practice, which helped both individuals and the team advance over the season.
When asked about the biggest achievement of the season, he talked about the ability to perform well and remain competitive even towards the end of the season. Players continued to push through tough matches, disregarding the built-up pressure of school ending. “People didn’t give up,” the coach explained.
The season also demonstrated the depth of Kent’s roster. Having many players of similar level, deciding the lineup for matches often became one of the coaching staff’s greatest challenges. Strong practice performance did not always promise the same in matches.
Looking ahead, the team is now prepping for the upcoming match at Kingswood Oxford School, where every player’s score would count toward the team total. Unlike previous matches throughout the season, there will not be any dropping scores, a challenge for all teams attending.
