With only 50 days left until graduation, Kent seniors came together for a night that felt like one of those moments everyone is going to remember. Even though the tradition only started last year, it already feels like something that has always been part of senior spring.
The idea actually came from last year’s prefects and Blue Key Student Committee. They had seen videos on TikTok of other schools doing 100 days till graduation celebrations and wanted to bring something similar to Kent. They went to Mrs. Brown-Butler with the idea, and instead of copying it exactly, she built on it using her own memories from high school. She remembered how students were sometimes allowed to go to the gym after hours, which led to the idea of letting seniors spend a night there together.
At first, there was no funding for the event, which could have stopped it from happening. Instead, teachers stepped in and made it work. The community came together and contributed money to support the night, including paying for a food truck. That effort is a big part of what made the tradition feel so meaningful from the start.
This year, the event came back even better. Mr. Provost helped organize the food truck, and more activities were added like movies (High School Musical 2 this year, for nostalgia) and spikeball. Seniors were also allowed to spend some time outside the gym, which made the night feel more relaxed and fun.
Mrs. Brown-Butler said she hopes to keep adding more activities for next year’s class and that this tradition continues to grow and get better every year.
More than anything, 50 Days Till Grad shows how much the Kent community cares. It is not just about celebrating being close to graduation, but about spending time together and making memories before everyone goes their separate ways.
