A recently established club at Kent School is already gaining traction among students looking for ways to stay active outside of varsity athletics. The Kent Track Club, founded by Mr. Ronayne, was created in response to a noticeable need within the student body.
According to Mr. Ronayne, many students finish their varsity seasons but still want a structured way to stay physically active. Instead of losing that routine, the club offers them an opportunity to continue training in a more flexible and low-pressure environment. “There were a lot of students who didn’t want to stop being active after their season ended,” he explained.
Mr. Ronayne’s personal background in track also played a major role in shaping the club. Having always been a runner himself, he wanted to create a space where students interested in track, whether experienced or new, could come together and train consistently.
Although the club only started recently, it has already seen steady participation. At least eight to ten students attend each practice, which is a strong turnout for a new club. Meetings take place every Monday and Thursday at 6:15 p.m., providing a consistent schedule that students can easily plan around.
Mr. Tobin also contributes to running the club, with a focus on sprint training, while Mr. Ronayne focuses more on mid- and long-distance running. Mr. Tobin’s involvement adds more structure to the practices and allows students to work on different aspects of running, rather than just distance.
The club’s early success really just shows that students are interested and that the setup works. They’re also starting to plan a few out-of-school meets, which gives people something to work toward without making it feel too competitive.
Looking ahead, Mr. Ronayne hopes the club continues to grow in popularity. Ideally, he would like to see more students join and potentially expand the number of weekly meetings.
