On Tuesday, May 5, Kent School celebrated academic excellence as the Cum Laude Society welcomed its newest members. Students and faculty gathered at Cumming House for the annual induction dinner, a night dedicated to honoring hard work, intellectual curiosity, and scholarly achievement.
After a formal dinner, the room shifted its focus to its speakers. In a thought-provoking speech, Mr. Stewart reflected on his own educational journey. He shared a personal truth that resonated deeply with the room: gratitude and motivation are both supremely important. Specifically, he spoke about thanking the one who is paying for school. He recalled that during his early academic years, he struggled to find focus and discipline. That changed, he explained, only when he began paying for his own education. When we pay for our own things, Mr. Stewart explained, it motivates us to work harder. His example struck a chord with students. The responsibility of covering his own tuition shifted his perspective entirely. Suddenly, every class, every assignment, and every late night felt personal. It was no longer an obligation to others but a commitment to himself.
After his lovely speech, student inductees were called forward one by one, receiving certificates and handshakes from Academic Dean Dr. MacNeil. However, the new inductees were left with more than just a pin or certificate. They left with a challenge: to recognize the gifts given to them, whether paid for by families, scholarships, or donors, and to cultivate the internal drive that comes from true ownership of one’s education.
Congratulations to all new Cum Laude members, and a special thank you to Mr. Stewart for reminding us that the most profound lessons often begin with gratitude.
