Over spring break, the School’s Language Department organized a language trip to Spain. Spanish Teachers Ms. Zimmerman and Mr. Torrez led10 students on a week-long trip to Spain. Offering real-life immersion in the Spanish language, this trip was planned to expose students to the Spanish culture and native language environment.
In terms of stay and plans for the trip, Ms. Zimmerman said, “We were primarily in Salamanca, just to the northwest of Madrid, about 2 hours. But we did a couple of day trips. We went to Segovia, which has a Roman aqueduct over 2000 years old. It has a place called the Alcassar, which is like a castle, basically, a former fort or fortress.”
Apart from going to famous historical sites, Ms. Zimmerman also highlighted their visit to La Peña de Francia, saying, “We drove up it, but it had panoramic views. It had snowed recently, so there were snow caps and some other stuff. It was really cool.” Furthermore, she also highlighted it as her favorite part of the trip, noting that “a lot of the rest of the trip was to places I had seen before, so it was exciting to do something new.” Aside from the enjoyment of the welcoming and rich cultural heritage of Spain, Ms. Zimmerman also expressed her love for Spanish cuisine as she and the students thoroughly appreciated the food.
Though the department has not yet planned any for the upcoming school year, it is very likely that another language immersion trip will take place. These trips are not restricted to students who take this language, giving all students an equal opportunity to explore and enjoy their spring break in a new environment with peers.
