During the spring of 2026, Kent School started the dining hall renovation project. The expected completion date is around November 2026. This project is one of the most important Kent School projects in recent years, since the dining hall is a place that almost every member of the Kent community visits daily.
Before the start of the renovation, Kent School made extensive preparations during the spring break of 2026. In under 30 days, the school built a temporary servery. As the director of the dining hall renovation project, Mr. Cataldo said, “We needed to set up a temporary servery and make sure we could still provide the service that is normally offered.” The temporary servery guarantees that every member of the community can still eat in the dining hall properly during the renovation period, and the dining service remains almost the same as before.
The Kent School dining hall was built in the 1990s, and the equipment was reaching the end of its life. In addition, some aspects of the layout are inconvenient. It lacked flow, and especially during school days, students and teachers were often crowded and needed to wait in long lines. Luckily, the new dining hall will be a game changer. Mr. Cataldo commented on the new dining hall as “more efficient, easier to use,” and “more contemporary, newer, nicer, brighter—a happier place to use.”
During the renovation, Kent School has been trying its best to limit the impact on the daily lives of community members. During the interview, Mr. Cataldo said, “We can’t fully replicate everything as before, but we are still trying to provide a full and thoughtful menu.” Although there are space limitations and a slight reduction in the menu, the dining hall is still trying to provide maximum choices for everyone. Meanwhile, the school has also adjusted the schedule to spread out the flow of people and avoid crowding.
Kent School also recognized that students need a place to chat, relax, study, and collaborate. Therefore, after discussions with student leaders, the school established a temporary student lounge to replace the one from the student center, which is also receiving a significant upgrade. In other words, during the construction period, the school is still trying its best to meet students’ original needs and expectations.
Of course, this project also presents many challenges. Since the building is old, workers encounter many unknown conditions during reconstruction. For example, as Mr. Cataldo mentioned, “You don’t always know what’s behind a wall until you remove it.” In addition, the construction market has experienced significant inflation, making the project much more expensive than before. Thanks to the support of alumni, parents, and current families, the project is continuing to move forward smoothly.
Overall, this renovation is not only making the dining hall newer and better, but it also improves students’ overall experience, making campus life more convenient, comfortable, and enjoyable.
