The 2024-25 Kent School Girls Varsity Tennis team closed out their season with a mix of fierce competition, close-knit camaraderie, and hard-earned victories. Under the guidance of Coach Ms. Thurlby and captain Kaitlyn Shen, the team displayed persistence and heart in every match, from their early road-heavy schedule to a season-defining win against Choate.
“If I had to describe this team in three words, I’d say: tough competition, fun, and persistent,” said Coach Thurlby. “They competed against some really strong teams. That win against Choate was a huge moment, and their match against Taft this week was also incredibly close. We’re really finishing the season strong.”
Ten of the team’s thirteen matches were away, a challenge that demanded not only stamina, but mental grit. “That was a lot of travel early in the season,” she admitted. “But the girls did a great job staying positive. Bringing snacks definitely helped. But more than that, they stayed together.”
The team’s chemistry grew both on and off the court. “We had a lot of returning players this year, which carried over the energy from last season,” said Thurlby. “But over time, I saw new friendships develop and old ones deepen, especially on those long road trips.”
One unique tradition that shaped their practices was a game called “Burn,” introduced by senior Maya Elms. “It’s a game that encourages hustle and going for winners,” Thurlby explained. “We played it a lot in practice, and it built a competitive spirit.”
Senior captain Kaitlyn Shen was a steady source of encouragement throughout the season. “She’s always giving us motivating words before each match,” said Thurlby. “Her presence made a real difference.”
While many players contributed consistently, a few stood out in quiet but impactful ways. “Kenzy has been our secret weapon—almost undefeated at number four singles,” Thurlby said. “She only lost one match all season. She frustrates opponents with her amazing slice from squash, and it’s really fun to watch. Eve has been solid at number two singles, and Kaitlyn has been doing great at number three.”
Reflecting on their growth, Thurlby added, “Part of me wishes we could go back and replay our first match of the season. I think we’d win it now. They’ve become stronger competitors.”
With seven seniors graduating, the team is preparing for a new chapter. “We’re going to miss our seniors. They made up most of the team this year,” said Thurlby. “But I’m confident in the returning players, Nora, Sam, and Natalie, they’re ready to step into leadership roles.”
From tough road matches to spirited games of Burn, this season of Kent Girls Varsity Tennis was built on resilience, teamwork, and a steady serve of joy. As the team looks ahead, they carry forward a legacy of persistence that promises a bright future.
