Ms. You, one of Kent’s longer-serving teachers, has been in our community since the fall of 2006. A member of the Math department, she has taught Pre-Calculus, Geometry, and Algebra in her time at Kent. She has also been the cross-country coach and girls’ rowing coach, working alongside Ms. Wilson. Currently, Ms. You is the assistant coach for strength and conditioning, an advisor to 9 students, and the head of the Asian Affinity at Kent.
When asked about her motives for teaching, Ms. You shared: “I wanted to make life better for high school students.” She strives to make math and school life more enjoyable for her students. She dedicates her time to make students build interest in the course and allow them to be creative in class with their work. She also encourages her students to take risks. As she makes students dominate the classroom, they begin to learn more independently and develop skills that help them beyond the academic field.
Before teaching at Kent, Ms.You was an English teacher in Korea after she completed her studies at Tufts University. When talking about why she chose Kent, she explained, “I knew I could give my children a good education.” She also appreciates the Kent community for welcoming her: “I was very grateful for the department chair for giving me a chance because he took a chance on me and hired me, even though I hadn’t taught math in 10 years.”
When discussing her future at Kent, Ms. You says that she is perfectly happy to remain a math teacher, which she hopes to do until she retires. Ms. You has dedicated most of her life to this community and strives to make it a better place with her presence.
