Each year as the winter term ends and the spring term looms ever closer, Kent students begin to notice flyers that urge them to “submit to The Cauldron.”
The Cauldron is a student literary arts magazine founded in 1947 by Mrs. Alberta Saffell Bell and Mr. C. Gordon Bell ’50, who were part of the editorial staff alongside Mr. Bell’s twin brother, Shane. Following in their footsteps, “Kent School’s student writers, artists, and photographers dedicate each issue of The Cauldron” to them by continuously creating, wrote last year’s Cauldron editor-in-chief, Nancy McLaughlin ’24.
The Cauldron encourages everyone to participate and share their creations, regardless of their experience. Whether the submissions are written pieces or artworks, they go through a selection process, are compiled into the annual Cauldron magazine at the end of the year, and finally published. The magazine is an especially wonderful platform for art lovers who want to let their artworks be seen by more people, or have lacked the opportunity to exhibit their passions. Of course, art includes literature as well. Poems, short stories, memoirs, and even essays — The Cauldron welcomes them all. Photographs, too, are greatly appreciated.
Aside from the magazine, The Cauldron creates merchandise for the student body. For the winter of 2024-2025, The Cauldron dropped a pair of limited edition pajama pants alongside some stickers. A little insider: The Cauldron is 100% student-run! The leaders of The Cauldron this year are Dennis Zeng ’25, Grace Chen ’26, and Harry Wan ’26.
From the research to the designs, each club member is in charge of a portion of the assembly line for both Cauldron merchandise and magazine. Cauldron members truly work very hard to make sure students have a great experience with it, so show some support to the members of the club.
