On October 10, from 7–9 P.M., Kent’s various music ensembles, including Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Choir, hosted their first performances of the 2025-2026 school year. The Fall Family Weekend Concert was a delightful celebration of both the coming of autumn and diverse genres of music.
Kentettes, the all-girl a capella group, opened the show with “The Greatest Show” from the hit musical The Greatest Showman, setting an energetic tone for the evening. Under the direction of Mr. Wynkoop, Kent’s new choral director, the other choirs followed with pieces ranging from “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” performed by the Kentone trio, to the Swahili gospel song “Baba Yetu,” performed by the Concert Choir.
They were succeeded by the Orchestra led by Ms. Hill, captivating the audience with three contrasting pieces of music: “Capriol Suite” by Peter Warlock, “Adagio” by Samuel Barber, and “Choreography” by Robert Sheldon. “Capriol Suite” opened the set with lively melodies and a vibrant essence, demonstrating the musicians’ impressive coordination as they stood throughout the performance. Next, the somber beauty of “Adagio” transformed the space into one full of passion but also a sense of calmness. Lastly, “Choreography” restored the room’s energy, earning the musicians enthusiastic applause.
To match the energy in the room, the Concert Choir performed the theme song from the movie “Ghostbusters.” The group encouraged the audience to sing along as they bopped to the perky tune. To close off the show, the Jazz Band, conducted by Mr. Larsen, began with “C Jam Blues” by Duke Ellington, a song with a simple, minimalistic sound that created a sense of swing, giving it an infectious and lively feeling. Another Duke Ellington piece, “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear From Me,” followed with a more moderate tempo and a bluesy, catchy melody. Then, to end the night, the band performed “Mambo Hot” by Victor Lopez. The Latin-style piece concluded with a vibrant, feel-good tone, creating an upbeat and optimistic atmosphere.
Overall, Fall Family Weekend was a resounding success and a reflection of the dedication and hard work students and faculty put into their performances. For families, faculty, and friends in attendance, it proved to be an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.
