Fun facts about Math teach Ms. Lorn, who joined the Kent Faculty in the fall of 2023: she has family connections to Cambodia but is from LA; English is her third language, but it is the only language that she can fluently speak; and, despite being a math and statistics teacher, Ms. Lorn has never majored in Math but majored in computer science.
When asked how the teaching process this has been going, Ms. Lorn, who teaches both Statistics and AS Statistics, said: “It has been a little bit tough to teach the same content all day for both classes, but I love the topic and content.” Ms. Lorn explained that the regular and AS statistics classes have similar content for the fall term, and the contents of these two courses will diverge after the first term.
Besides academics, Ms. Lorn coaches JV volleyball and girls JV tennis. “Actually I have never played volleyball,” Ms. Lorn said with a smile. “But the rules of volleyball are similar to tennis, so I can coach volleyball.”
Although only living in Kent with her fiance Mr. Shotton for a short time, Ms. Lorn loves the Kent community: “Everyone is open for conversations, not only conversations about academics but also athletics and social life. Everyone is happy to talk about anything, not just one topic.” However, challenges definitely exist. Ms. Lorn describes that the pacing is hard for her since both the students’ and teachers’ schedules are very packed: “It is hard to get used to such a long day.”
Ms. Lorn’s teaching philosophy is that the classroom is made to learn, and one can only learn when one makes mistakes. She believes that being able to understand a student’s background and why they are struggling is important for a good teacher.
