As the warming sunshine ushers in spring to the “lovely valley land” of Kent, students are spending more time with their friends outside enjoying the weather: tanning, grabbing a sweet treat in town, and playing spike ball. But what really is spring without an intense game of baseball?
The baseball team is coached by Coach Michal Wright ’81, an avid baseball player and fan who began his career in middle school, and subsequently has been coaching for over twenty years after graduating from Kent. Under the leadership of Captain Giovanni DiGiulian ’24, the Kent Varsity Boys squad will be playing a total of nineteen games, with over half of them at home. The sight and sound of the cheering-fan-filled bleachers cheering the Blues on is a spectacle synonymous with spring.
In their second game of the season, the team played against Loomis Chaffee School, outlasting them with a result in a thrilling 19-18 slugfest. Coach Wright describes this defeat as the most memorable game thus far in the season as “we haven’t beaten them in over fifteen years!”
However, the success of a team doesn’t come without paying a price for the strenuous challenges they’ve endured. After the Loomis game, Coach Wright shared that the team had several losses with close results, one of which “[they] lost in the last inning of the game.” Nevertheless, Coach Wright reflects that the team “[has] pulled through, making sure to stay on the right course and finish the season strong.” Coach Wright also applauds the team for its grit and resilience throughout the season by “coming together to be the best version of [themselves] each time [they] go out there.” With nine players graduating this June, Coach Wright wishes them all the best in their future endeavors, and urges them to “stay together to support the team in [their] last spring season!”
