The girls’ rowing team has had a promising season so far, marked by notable performances and significant progress.
During spring break, the team embarked on a training camp in Tempe, Arizona. The camp provided an excellent opportunity for intensive training and team bonding. The favourable weather conditions and well-organised facilities contributed to what Coach Wilson described as their most successful camp to date. “The training conditions were amazing,” she said. “I think that nobody really wanted to come back.”
In a recent regatta, the team showcased their skill with both novice and experienced rowers. The fourth crew, composed entirely of novices, gained invaluable experience as they tackled their first race. The varsity crews also demonstrated their competitive edge, with the first varsity crew maintaining efficient rowing techniques against higher stroke rates from competitors. “There’s an efficiency right now that we definitely try to train up in the athletes,” Coach Wilson said. “If you can take fewer strokes and cover distance, that’s better than anything.”
The season has also seen remarkable achievements, including the team’s solid performance at a recent home tournament and the successful integration of new rowers into the second and third boats. The coach also emphasised the importance of personal improvement and team unity, noting the positive atmosphere and close bonds formed between senior and freshman rowers. “There’s been a really nice spirit across the team with the older athletes trying to get to know the beginners.”
Despite the harsh cross-headwinds the team faced in Saratoga Springs, they managed to perform admirably, demonstrating their resilience and adaptability. As the season progresses, the team aims to achieve their best results at the upcoming New England Championships. The boats are entering the regatta ranked 4th (first boat), 6th (second boat), and 1st (third boat).
Wilson is focused on guiding each athlete through their learning curve, emphasising personal bests and continuous improvement. With a solid foundation and clear goals, the girls’ rowing team is poised for a strong finish to the season, striving for excellence both individually and as a team.
