As the snow starts to melt and spring arrives, a new sports season comes to life. Boys Varsity Tennis is led this year by Mr. Thomas Hunt, who has coached tennis for 12 years, and co-captains and number one singles and doubles players Andy Chen ’24 and Thomas Parlatore ’24.
At the beginning of the season the boys faced some hard matches, but Mr. Hunt said that “it should start getting easier as we keep going.” He also expressed pride in the players. He said, “this team is probably the best team I ever coached in my 12 years of coaching tennis.” That said, he believes that there is room for improvement.
Mr. Hunt has been trying to use drills that involve a lot of volleys since he feels the players aren’t as comfortable when it comes to playing a winning volley shot. There are also more drills Mr. Hunt focuses on, but he mostly does drills based on each players’ weaknesses. For example, Mr. Hunt said, ‘if two players aren’t comfortable with their backhand swing, I would pair them up and make them practice backhand drills only.”
However, every day isn’t just practicing drills. Mr. Hunt mentioned that every Tuesday there are challenge matches. The challenge matches determine the ladder for the next game. For example, if a player was number #8 in a game, and he wants to be #6 in the next game, he can challenge the player. There are also some days that Mr. Hunt likes to call “fun days,” when the boys just play games with each other for fun and joke around together.
Overall, Boys Varsity Tennis are a pretty solid team and they should have some good achievements for the next couple games. They also have a challenging match against Choate that is coming up soon, at which we wish the team great success.
