This fall term has been an interesting transitional season for Girls Varsity Volleyball. With Mrs. Galusha as head coach, upcoming players from JV adjusting to the intensity of varsity, and three seniors pushing through injuries, many things have changed since last fall for the team. Nevertheless, they are focusing on improving and look forward to the upcoming fall for a better season.
There is a lot of room for improvement since they have a young team this year. Having five new players, and more than half the team being fourth-formers, the girls started off the season with an uphill battle in facing some of the strongest teams in the Founders League such as Choate, Berkshire, and Hotchkiss. Although they faced some tough losses, it helped the team’s overall growth. By learning from their mistakes, the girls improved and beat Ethel Walker 3-0, continuing their journey as a fresh team with new varsity players.
Volleyball is a harder game than it seems to be. Requiring both physical and mental consistency, small things like missed serves and unforced errors can cost a game. “Volleyball is a very competitive game, it requires you to stay in it the whole way through, and 1 point can go a long way,”said Ms. Galsuha. Sometimes, volleyball is more about spirit rather than technique; to have a positive mentality when facing hard situations is a key component to victory.
When asked what her favorite things about coaching volleyball is, Mrs.Galusha expressed her love for the game. She talked about how volleyball is the most popular female sport, and how fun it is to play and watch. She stated that “it’s ok to be competitive unapologetically,” and that’s the main reason why she loves volleyball.
When asked about recruits for next year, Mrs. Galusha seemed confident that there will be new players joining the team. She’s hoping to see some strong outside hitters and players who are more experienced. With a strong fighting spirit, Kent Girls Varsity Volleyball has a bright future ahead of them, and I’m certain that we will see great improvements in the coming years.
