One of the key highlights on the Spring athletics calendar is undoubtedly golf Kent is fortunate to boast its very own golf team. The Varsity team, coached by Mr. Sokolnicki, consists of seven players: Alex Elia ’23, Noah Greenberg ’24, Hank Hannan ’24, Samuel Pfefferle ’24, Charlie Qiu ’26, Jirathep Sirirat-usdorn ’25, and Eli Weinberger ’23.
Last Wednesday, the Varsity team played against Choate and Trinity-Pawling schools. Once again, the team returned home to the lovely valley land of Kent with a victory. The team convincingly beat Choate and TP 187-194-243. Upon the win, the team captain, Eli Weinberger ’23, gave his thoughts on not only the game itself but also his three years of golf experience at Kent.
Weinberger described the most recent match as one of the “high point[s] of our season so far.” The proud captain shared that the team had progressed significantly mentally and physically since the beginning of the season. “Once our guys got accustomed to the more stressful feel of playing competitive golf, we started to see lower scores and wins,” he says. “Like any other sports, matches are mood congruent. Learning how to deal with emotions while playing a match is one of the biggest challenges that an athlete must face.”
One of the obstacles the golf team had to overcome was losing one of their players, Alex Elia ’23 due to injury. Weinberger describes him as “the best golfer [he has] ever played with.” Despite this misfortune, the team showed great resilience and maintained a positive attitude throughout the season.
Kent Varsity golf team has already played eleven matches, delivering an impressive record at each match. Next, they will be competing in the Pippy O’Connor Tournament this Monday. We are looking forward to witnessing the team’s growth as they secure more victories this season.
