Girls Varsity Tennis has had an outstanding performance throughout the season this spring, led by Paula Lanius ‘23 as Captain and Mr. Ober as Head Coach.
Overall, the team has improved compared to last year, achieving six victories and six losses. Among those, their most outstanding accomplishment was defeating Taft with a score of 6 to 3. “They have always been our rivals these years, and yet we have beaten them decisively,” said Mr. Ober. Also worth celebrating is that Lanius, the team captain, only lost two 2 matches throughout the season, a very strong end to her senior year.
This year, one of the team’s focuses is doubles. “The only way to play doubles is to be aggressive and attack all the time,” said Mr. Ober. They put most of their time into practicing doubles, especially for strategies like poaching. Doing cardio is also another part of their daily practice. Even though practices are hard, Mr. Ober tried to keep things fun. “I believe in the value of hard work and fun, and it is easier to work hard when you are having fun,” said Mr. Ober.
Next year, the team will be led by the new captain Kaitlyn Shen along with competitive players like Lexie Pace and Eva Pinchas, whom Mr. Ober described “a tough competitor with a vicious slice backhand.”
“Tennis is a strange sport,” said Mr. Ober. “It’s a team sport yet a very individual sport — If everyone is improving individually, then the team is getting better.” Thankfully this year the team was able to do just that.
