Kent School’s dance team is preparing for this year’s annual Fall Dance Concert, which will take place in Mattison Auditorium on November 10th and 11th. Every year, members of the dance team put on a show for the whole community, displaying their talents through passionate movements. This year, the team will perform six- teen pieces, all choreographed with the underlying theme of possibility.

The team, comprised of fourteen students, along with director Ms. Morris, have worked extremely hard since early September to prepare for the final show. Ms. Morris explains that “it’s a very physically demanding activity; they do a lot of cardio, a lot of strength training.”

Led by captains Lara Li ’19 and Sarah Choi ’19, many enthusiastic students appreciate the freedom for creativity the dance program offers. Only five out of the sixteen pieces are faculty coordinated, with the rest entirely choreographed by students. From the dance moves to the lighting and music, students have the authority to decide what best fits their ideal concept. “There’s a specific vision that they need to make physical,” says Ms. Morris.

As the team continues to work hard for the wonderful show, one of the difficulties that the dancers must adjust to is the limited amount of time available in the studios each day. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. During the daily two hours of dance, all students continue to improve and perfect this art.

Ms. Morris notes that the ability to “communicate and convey messages without words” in dance is the root of her passion. The whole team encourages the community to attend the show and support their fellow classmates.
