New Racquet Center nearing completion
October 13, 2017
The new squash courts complex is nearing completion, and it will contain eight international squash courts, a viewing area, an office for the coach, a lobby for memorabilia, a vending machine, water fountains, a bathroom, and shower facilities.
Still under construction, the new squash courts are located in a simple green metal building located to the north of the tennis house. A lobby will connect the squash courts to the tennis house. These new courts will also contain new technology, such as audio visual capability for scoring.
The brand new, high quality international standard squash courts will “allow us to hold tournaments as well as run our own interscholastic and recreational squash programs,” according to Father Schell.
This is a huge step forward for our squash program and great for students who are interested in both playing and watching this sport. This new establishment will “raise the profile of all of our athletics offerings,” says Father Schell, while also positioning us with the top schools in the country, all of which have modern squash courts.
The original squash courts were built in early 1966, and they have served the school very well. At that time, they were state of the art American regulation courts. The three courts were named in honor of the Brainard family and permitted Kent School to have their own squash program.
Costing three million dollars, the squash courts are being built and will be sustained with the support of parents and alumni. Designed by Jeff Gaunt, this building contains courts manufactured by CourtTech, a Germany-based company, and Bach Wood Flooring, an American company. The courts arrived approximately two weeks ago and have already been installed, but the flooring is still on its way. The board of trustees is supervising the construction of this building.
On November 11, there will be an opening of the squash facility. This event will involve a dedication and an exhibition match. Refreshments will be provided and everyone is invited to attend!
