Artist Profile: Jaehan Kim ’15

Jaehan Kim ’15, known as Jay, is an artist with a passion for sculpture and creation. He is taking AP 3D Studio Art (a term-length course known as AP Sculpture) for the fifth time this year.

Jay cites childhood influences as his initial reason for getting interested in sculpting. “As a child, I definitely loved making things,” he says. His parents were also enthusiastic about his childhood creativity—particularly his mother, who was an art historian. She encouraged young Jay’s early interest in creation and helped him find an outlet for it in sculpture.

Though Jay does not plan to major in art or sculpture, he hopes to keep his love for creation intact. “I’ll probably take art or sculpture as a minor in university, and definitely keep it as a hobby for the rest of my life,” he says.

However, he also says, “I don’t think I’ll be limited to just sculpture. I just like doing things with my hands. I can easily see myself building my own desk and chairs or even working in a blacksmith’s workshop when I grow up.”

Jay’s short-term artistic ambition is to complete his concentration, which is a part of his AP Sculpture Portfolio. He intends to create a “well-developed concentration of around ten to twelve different pieces each representing different human emotions.” Those would represent the emotions that are important to him, and in a sense define him.

Jay’s intellectual and emotional bond with sculpting and art define him as an artist, one of Kent’s very best.
