As one of Kent’s Senior Prefects, Kate McKiernan continues the tradition of student leadership shaped by warmth, determination, and genuine commitment to supporting her peers and the people of Kent School. Just like Eli Booth, the other fellow SP of the Class of 2026, she has the same dedication and drive to uplift the community, but she does so in a way that is uniquely her own, grounded in kindness and approachability.

McKiernan’s motivation to lead didn’t just come from one specific source. Rather, it is shaped by the people who inspired her along the way. “There wasn’t a specific moment; I was more inspired by the people in the classes above me,” she shared. “I saw the upperclassmen as role models and wanted to create the welcoming environment that they created for me.” McKiernan’s vision for leadership is rooted in gratitude, carefully constituted by the desire to give back the same comfort, encouragement, and sense of belonging she once received.

Outside of the SC, McKiernan’s involvement in athletics plays a major role in shaping how she leads. “On the teams I play on, we talk about always respecting your teammates and looking out for them, no matter how close your relationship is,” she explained. “I try to lead that way by treating everyone with the same respect and being a resource to those around me.” With her role of being the captain of three varsity teams, the things she learned throughout her sports seasons juxtaposed with her duties as the Senior Council perfectly, helping her develop a leadership style rooted in teamwork and respect.

There is always a challenge when it comes to balancing friendship and leadership simultaneously, but McKiernan approaches it with honesty and care. Balancing her role as a leader and a friend, she describes how she views herself as not one with a dual-identity, but rather both duties are a part of her intrinsic obligations. They come from Kate inside herself. It’s easier for her to navigate a situation when friendship lays the foundation for trust and understanding.
