This year, Kent News reached out to all the dorm parents to learn a little more about their experiences living in the dorms at Kent and being part of the Kent community. Here is a little of what Field looks like.
Mr. Cheney shared that this is his second year living in Field with his wife and two children, Maggie and Zeke. What he loves most about Field is the residents; he says they’re kind, thoughtful, and full of joy. When asked about his favorite tradition at Kent, he mentioned the Tapping Ceremony, calling it a special time where everyone celebrates one another. His favorite restaurant in town is Kingsley Tavern.
Ms. Schade, who’s been the Dorm Head for five years, also highlighted how much she enjoys the people who live in Field. She said the common room always has a fun and positive atmosphere, filled with laughter and conversation. On the flip side, she joked that the less enjoyable parts of dorm life include messy showers, a chaotic kitchenette, and the smell of snacks that never seems to go away. Her favorite memories come from moments when the dorm bonded over movie nights, game nights, and dorm feeds. Her go-to spot in town is Wilson’s, which she calls the best place for coffee, and like Mr. Cheney, her favorite Kent tradition is the Tapping Ceremony.
Mx. Zucca is also in their second year living in Field, along with their cat, Galaxy. They love walking through the Walkway Gallery and seeing all the artwork on display. Their least favorite thing about dorm life is the fire and lockdown alarms, especially for poor Galaxy. One of their favorite memories is spending a quiet Saturday night doing a jigsaw puzzle in the common room that turned into a fun hangout with several Field residents. As for favorite restaurants, Zucca mentioned Wilson’s and KPG, and their favorite Kent tradition is Day of Service—both the 3rd Form one in the fall and the OutREACH Day in the spring, which they love for how it brings the community together through service.
Ms. Goode has lived in Field for about three and a half months. She says her favorite part about living there is the students and how close the dorm is to Mattison and the Dining Hall. One thing she doesn’t enjoy as much is when students let the dishes pile up. Her favorite Field memory so far is seeing students dancing and singing together. When it comes to food, her current favorite restaurant in town is The Kent Kitchen, and her favorite Kent tradition is Ring Day.
Ms. Ruschil is in her third year living in Field with her dog Judge. She says she loves the friendly students she gets to see around the dorm and the fun conversations she has with them during the day. A less enjoyable part for her is how often food gets burned in the common room microwave. One of her favorite memories is when she got to play games that students made for their statistics class, and she was even the test subject. Her go-to restaurant in town is KPG, and her favorite Kent tradition is the Color Run.
From late-night puzzles to community celebrations, it’s clear that Field’s dorm parents make the dorm feel like a real home, messy kitchenette and all.
