Varsity Golf Competes Against Canterbury and Millbrook

On April 10th, Kent School’s varsity golf team headed out to Bulls Bridge Golf Club for its first match of the season against Canterbury School and Millbrook School. The past week had been rather cold and rainy, not only leaving the team soggy and shivering but preventing the team from practicing in the best conditions and at their full capability.

On match day, however, the weather finally cleared up and though it was still slightly windy, it was beautiful and sunny. With three newcomers and three returners, everyone on the team hoped to do well and start the season off with a win. Certainly, the team’s hard work and determination paid off.

The six golfers started the match on the front nine of the course and continued to play quite well, but towards the end of the game, they began to waver in their performance. As Nicole Chan ’21 describes, “Hole 9 is a hard hole to finish well on, and the greens were not in the best conditions; they were a little bumpy.”

Even though the greens were not as smooth as they could be, as the Bulls Bridge Golf Course only recently opened up for business after a cold, harsh winter, the team continued the grind and Chan expresses that she still “thinks the team ended the round pretty well.”

In the end, Kent won against Canterbury’s and Millbrook’s total score of 218 and 228 with a solid finish of 205.

“The part that is hardest to work on is the mental piece, and that comes with confidence, which comes from practice,” says Head Coach Jeremy Sokolnicki. While he thinks the team did solid work, the team members still need to continue to maintain a good work ethic and a positive mindset to keep doing well in the future.

With this being only the first match into the season, students will eagerly watch as the golf team continues to strive and show their potential out on the course.
