Boys Varsity Ice Hockey’s Great Season

The Kent boys varsity ice hockey team has had a stellar season so far, putting up an impressive record of 8-5-1. Just over halfway through the season, the team wishes to carry on their positive momentum as they head into the home stretch. Head Coach Dale Reinhardt states, “I think we’re getting better which is represented in our most recent stretch of five wins and one loss in the last six games. I think we’re happy with where we are currently.”

If the team keeps winning, they will have a great chance of making it into the Elite 8 playoffs. Captain Colin Cobb ’19 states, “The main goal is to make Elite 8 playoffs, and we’re on a good track right now.” Recently the boys have been on a tear, only losing two out of the last eight games.

The team’s hard work and effort all season was shown in great wins against quality opponents like Millbrook, Loomis Chaffee, and Gunnery. Against Millbrook and Loomis Chaffee, the boys came back despite facing late deficits. Coach Reinhardt recalls “we were down 3-0 to Loomis with eight minutes left in the game. They never quit and we won 4-3 in OT. Everyone was supportive, determined, and never gave up.”

The team has gained a lot of newcomers this year, and the captains (Cobb, Finn McClain ’19, Alex Giummo ’19) and the seniors have done a great job of welcoming the new players onto the team. Cobb says that the “new kids acclimated quickly. It’s one big family and everyone buys into the program. They’re part of the boys now.”

As with any successful team, every member is valued. Coach Reinhardt stresses “accountability towards teammates, and some of that comes from just playing a team sport.” The entire Kent Hockey program explains the value of enjoying their time at Kent beyond the ice. Coach Reinhardt says “they’ll have lasting friendships that last beyond Kent. I want them to be contributing members of the community.”

The captains of the team also want to thank the Kent community for their continued support. As the team continues its push towards the playoffs, Cobb says, “boys are making some noise, support the boys in the final stretch. Boys are coming for playoffs.”
