Mission Committee hopes to save donkey

This spring, Kent School has started its very own donkey adoption program. The purpose of the adoption is to provide for mistreated donkeys. The program was inspired by Ms. Prickett’s visit to the Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary over March break. She immediately fell in love with the donkeys, and brought up the adoption idea with the rest of the Missions Committee.

Bonaire is a small island in the Dutch Caribbean which has recently become modernized. New roads have been constructed, but the shortage of stop signs and traffic lights has led to many donkey killings. As a result, Bonaire locals have created a sanctuary for injured donkeys.

The money for the adoption has been raised through Chapel offerings. In order to adopt a donkey, the school would have to raise 175 dollars a year, to keep it housed and fed at the Bonaire sanctuary. Morgan Baravalle’ 17, the sacristan, is pleased that the adoption is “unique charity work that we have never done before.”

Ms. Prickett believes that when finding causes we should be “choosing something that we care about, like animal safety, happiness and well being, and be the change we wish to see.” Ms. Prickett hopes that Kent could eventually adopt more than one donkey, but there are countless other causes out there that also deserve attention and which the Mission Committee works to support.
