On Wednesday, January 11th, the Kent girls varsity basketball team fought a tough game against Ethel Walker. The Kent girls suffered a series of unfortunate fouls against Ethel Walker’s strong offense. Despite the adverse conditions, however, they never lost their spirit and kept striving until the very last minute of the game.

In the first quarter, the Kent girls were off to a great start, earning a 2-and 3-pointer in the first 2 minutes. Four minutes into the game, their lead was thwarted by several fouls and free throws by the opposing team. The girls quickly gained back the initiative and boosted the score to a 11:6. At 10:29, Captain Liz Clarke ’17, a solid offense, leaped up and shot a beautiful lay-up.

Though the Kent girls continued to earn points, Ethel Walker took advantage of their fouls and started closing the gap. Within the last few minutes, the opponents made several successful shots, and Kent ended the first quarter with a score of 22:30.

In the second quarter, Ethel Walker kept its lead, despite the Kent girls’ best effort to catch up with the score. Clarke and her teammates made several successful attempts to block Ethel Walker’s offense. Even in the last minute of the game, the girls refused to give up and made some nice shots. Unfortunately, the final score was 33:49.

After the game, the Coach Duncan commented, “This was a disappointment because we thought we had a good chance of winning. The girls need to work on executing offense under pressure.”

Though the girls lost the game, Duncan identified some strong performances and players, including Dani Baylor ’19, who, according to Duncan, was a key member of Kent’s offense, and will hopefully continue to be one as Kent moves into upcoming games.
