December 20, 2016
On Saturday December 12th, Kent Girls JV Squash crushed Canterbury with a 7-0 triumph in their first home game. Though under immense pressure, all Kent players played well with great motivation and high morale.
The game started with our captain, Charlotte Kwong, a fifth former, against Canterbury’s captain, Selina Xiu. With her skill and enthusiasm, Kwong started off her match with a huge lead of 9-1 and finished it with a solid gap of 11-2. In her second and third matches, she kept her spirit up and defeated her opponent, ending her game with an amazing 3-0.
Our fourth player, Proud Tantasathien, also won all three matches against Canterbury’s number 4 player. Although she has never played squash before, Tantasathien picked up the squash techniques quickly and showed her talent in her very first squash game.
Lauren Page, our 6th player, won the first two matches, had a close loss of 10-11 to the Canterbury player, and finished her game with a 11-9 victory in the fourth match.
Though losing her first two matches, our number 3 player Inez Vuthimedhi didn’t lose her spirit. With her strong mental power, she ended up defeating the opponent in the three intense and decisive matches.
Kayla Shah, the 5th player on the team, started off with a 11-7 victory but lost to her opponent in her second round. In her third match, she served amazingly and defeated the Canterbury girl with a striking 11-1. She had a tough battle in the 4th and 5th round but eventually won the game with a 3-2.
Our 7th player Cheryl Chen, a third former, won her very first squash game with a 3-1. Though she lost her first match, she won the subsequent three games with great cautiousness and confidence.
Finally, Natalie Stevens, our number 1 player, crushed her opponent in the first two matches with striking speed and strength. After a little setback in the third round, Stevens regained her motivation and won the fourth match with a big gap of 11-6.
After the game, the JV squash coach Mr. Hunt, gave an uplifting speech, commenting on the girl’s good performance and highlighting their strong mental power. The captain Charlotte Kwong also talked about the team’s right motivation and expressed her positive expectation for the future season. Mr. Hunt further mentioned his goal for the team: “to improve physical techniques as well as mental competitiveness. Fight for every point and run for every ball!”
