After an unpromising start with the record of 1-4, the girls varsity tennis team redeemed itself today with a decisive victory against Westover School 6-1. The Kent girls played intelligent tennis and were able to bring out the best of their games.

Kent started off with an early one-point lead as all three doubles dominated their opponents. Kristine Gegeshidze ’15 and Grace Sundstrom ’15 grabbed an early victory 8-2 at No.1 doubles. Emily DeWael ’15 and Anna Costa ’17 were not challenged, quickly following with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 double. Christina Khalil ’18 and Caitlin Tardio ’15 claimed an 8-5 victory at No. 2 double.

The Lions continued to deliver an impressive performance in single matches, dropping only a total of one match out of six. Emily Burnett ’17 played consistent tennis and brought home an early 8-0 at No. 6 spot. Captain Gegeshidze’s forehand was on point. She hit winners after winners, claiming an effortless victory 8-1 at No.1 position. Sundstrom secured Kent’s victory with an 8-3 win at No. 3 spot. Costa played quality tennis; however came up short 4-8 against her strong opponent at No.5 spot. DeWael was contested until the very end. The score was 7-7 and the game went on to an exciting tiebreaker. DeWael came up on top and secured a close victory for Kent 8-7 (7-5). Khalil concluded the match with a decisive 8-1 win at No. 3 position.

Head coach Ober and senior captain Gegeshidze said the team is improving at an astonishing pace. Gegeshidze added, “We have the potential. We just need to use it.” It was an uplifting win for the girls and we hope to see similar performances the rest of the season.
