Boys Varsity Tennis Battles Avon Old Farms

On April 6, the Kent School boys varsity tennis team took on Avon Old Farm as the heavy underdog in the indoor tennis courts. The game was hard fought but ultimately ended in a 1-6 loss.

The struggle started early on, with the first single match-up resulting in a blowout, putting Avon in an early lead. Avon’s lead continued to grow through both the second and third singles matches. However, with a burst of strength, Preston Nearis ’21, in the fourth singles match, ended this losing streak in a close game.

“We are a young and inexperienced team this year, and there are a lot of improvements that can be made throughout the season,” Coach Hunt says. After the loss to Avon Old Farm, he reflects, “Avon’s tennis team is well-structured and their players are extremely talented. What I am expecting from this group this year is to give maximum effort and gain experience in each game.”

Coach Hunt expressed his desire to spend this season’s time focusing on developing young players. This year, the top six players on Kent’s boys’ varsity tennis team features a core group containing mostly young players: three sophomores, two freshmen, and only one senior. This means that there will be plenty of room for improvement going forward. Rebuilding periods are inevitable in every sports team, and Kent School’s boys’ varsity tennis team’s future strength is highly anticipated as the boys continue to steadily grow.
