Faculty Grants Encourage Innovation

Mark Stephanos

With the commencement of the 2018-2019 school year, a new method of receiving financial support for interest- ing projects was introduced to the faculty.

The innovation grant is a payment from the school of up to $1,500 that is awarded to any Kent staff or faculty who presents a proposal to use the money for a unique method of learning.

These innovation grants are meant to help set Kent apart from other schools as a provider of truly unique educational experiences.

As Headmaster Father Schell states, “Kent needs to grow with the rising quality of education in other schools; if we do not change our approach, the gap between us and other schools will shorten and the consumer won’t be getting as much of a payoff for the premium they pay for Kent. We want students to be in an environment with new ideas.”

This new initiative puts the ball in teachers’ courts as to how they use their knowledge and skills to create new experiences for the students. Father Schell further remarks, “even though I am the teachers’ supervisor, they know how to best do their job, so it would make sense for them to be the leads on this new initiative.”

Giving teachers the freedom to design this program allows them to use their personal experience in order to best utilize the Innovation Grant.
